TCL report finds Telecoms Providers are using Managed Services & Cloud as the key to future growth, but investment in new Data Centre infrastructure is required

Published: Thu 25 September 2014

TCL (Tariff Consultancy Ltd), the specialist research company in Data Centre pricing, highlights the importance of Telecoms Providers investing in new Data Centre infrastructure in a recently published report.

The Telecoms Provider is developing its own new flexible Data Centre infrastructure to support 3 business trends including –

  • The migration of services to the Cloud - including computing, storage, archiving, security & back up services

  • The rise in partial application outsourcing - including selective application outsourcing based in the cloud

  • The spread of Unified Communications (UC) – including the integration of voice, audio conferencing, web conferencing, VoIP & messaging.

The growth in these trends are identified in TCL’s New Telco Data Centre - Pricing for the New Telecoms Data Centre – 2014 to 2019 report. A key part of the report is a TCL survey of 57 key Telecom Providers around the world who have developed their own Data Centre infrastructure. The survey includes over 2,200 Telecom Provider Data Centre facilities with around 2.9 million square metres of space (forecast as of the end of 2014).

Telecoms Providers are now requiring their Data Centre facilities to supply a wide range of Managed Services, as well as the traditional services of colocation and IP connectivity. In the New Telco context, Managed Services can include server hosting, managed hosting, managed security, managed desktop, and IT equipment, hardware & software monitoring services.

The range of services offered by the Telecoms Provider is much wider than those offered by the Data Centre provider. The Telecoms Provider is using the Data Centre facility for Network services, IP connectivity, interconnect services and Disaster Recovery services.

With the introduction of a wide range of Managed Services the Telecoms Provider can provide value added services and is taking responsibility for enterprise IT services with monitoring, diagnosis and reporting of IT equipment, network, hardware & software. By using Managed Services the enterprise IT users can reduce the number of its personnel required for routine monitoring services and tasks and can focus on IT development.

By offering a Managed Services portfolio, the Telecom Provider gains additional revenue, and become a more valuable partner to an enterprise client. It also is in a position to upsell services and assist clients in their migration to the cloud using a pay as you go payment model.

But the Telecoms Provider is now developing its own Data Centre facilities so as to be able to provide a secure, resilient and flexible IT environment for the housing of IT and cloud services. The New Telco Data Centre is being used to prove the Telecom Provider’s credibility in providing hosted and Managed Services.
