5G Tariff Analysis

Telecomspricing latest research reveals that two-thirds of all 5G plans surveyed have 50 GB or higher data allowances.

Published: Mon 6 July 2020

Telecomspricing's latest research reveals that despite the outbreak of the Covid-19 corona virus some 24 MNOs have launched 5G services in 12 countries across the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America:

  • 14 MNOs have introduced 5G services in eight European countries over the last 6- month period.
  • 11 MNOs in four Countries have introduced 5G services in the Rest of the World (including Canada, Hong Kong, Japan and South Africa) over the last 6-month period.

The main trends identified include:
  • MNO 5G speeds vary - 5G speeds range from 1.4 GB down to 100 Mbps. But most MNOs do not provide precise download speeds, beyond saying that speeds are 10 times more than 4G. But the download speed of 5G varies in part due to the spectrum that is allocated, with Rogers (Canada) stating that 5G speeds will be similar to higher LTE/4G speeds.
  • MNOs are offering 5G services as part of an existing plan – For example, Play (Poland) includes 5G on 3 out of their 4 existing plans (not the starter plan). Vodafone (Netherlands) includes 5G as part of their RED plan (but charge Euro €2.5 per month for other plans).
  • Many MNOs offer 5G as part of an unlimited data plan – Out of the 68 5G plans launched during the last 6 month period, 20 are unlimited data plans (30 per cent) and are the most common data allowance offered.
  • Price premiums are being charged but are postponed to a later date – In Canada both Bell Mobility and Rogers have waived their CAD $10 & CAD $15 per month surcharge for 5G plans until 2021, and Vodafone (Australia) has intimated that it will charge a surcharge with commercial launch.

The survey also reveals that overall 5G mobile data allowances are significantly higher than for 4G. Out of all plans covered in this 5G Price Tracker, – around 200  – 25 per cent  have unlimited data allowances, 27 per cent with a 100 GB or more data allowance, 14 per cent have a 50 GB or more data allowance – meaning that two-thirds of all 5G plans surveyed have 50 GB or higher data allowances.

However, it should be noted that 5G services are still at an emergent stage, with network coverage, the availability and the purchase cost of handsets acting as barriers to mass market deployment. The deployment of 5G already has been surprisingly widespread when compared with the early stage of 4G LTE.

And 5G is soon poised to enter the mainstream as more MNOs offer lower cost entry-level packages and the availability of lower-cost 5G smartphones starts to improve later in 2020. These two trends have the potential to make 5G the transformative technology of the year.
